Why exercise?

Keeping fit and healthy can mean different things to different people, and there are many who are yet to be convinced as to why moving and exercising is so important to physical and mental health. Well, the truth is that people can and do change sedentary lifestyles; it is just a matter of time. However, only you can decide whether there is a need for behavioural change and whether you are prepared to take some action.

The empirical positive relationship found between exercising and enhanced health and well-being is overwhelming. Further, there is extensive evidence out there confirming that exercising on a regular basis reduces the morbidity/mortality of many well known universal killer diseases. For example, aerobic exercises (i.e., brisk walking, swimming, running, and cycling) and strength training (i.e., lifting weights and push-ups) can both increase your muscle mass and decrease your body fat. Both modalities will boost your metabolism because you will build up muscles which are metabolically active. Therefore, regardless of your age, gender, and body type you will gain significant psychological and physiological benefits, some of which are highlighted below.
